Jose Mourinho’s last minute flare up following Chelsea late equaliser at the weekend could be the turning point of his Manchester United tenure, according to Ian Wright.

The United boss leapt from his seat in the away dugout after Chelsea coach Marco Ianni taunted his counterparts as Ross Barkley secured a point with his stoppage time goal.

Ianni has since been charged with improper conduct by the FA while Mourinho has been formally warned by the governing body after he had to be restrained by stewards in the Stamford Bridge tunnel.

With the reaction to the incident being overly in favour of the United manager, Wright feels that it could be a turning point for the Portuguese.

“It won't have felt like it at the time but Chelsea’s late goal and the chaos which followed could be the most crucial point of Jose Mourinho’s Old Trafford life,” the former Arsenal man wrote in The Sun.

“It could be the single biggest incident in galvanising a Manchester United team which, let’s be honest, have been a big disappointment so far.

“And it could be the one moment when the mood finally shifts towards Mourinho from all quarters.

“I haven’t heard anyone with anything but sympathy for the way Mourinho reacted to the goading — ‘sympathy’ and ‘Jose’ aren’t usually heard in the same sentence.”

He added: “When he raced from the dugout to try to get hold of Ianni, it was the action of a man for whom it mattered so much.

“It was the action of a man who cares. And to those United supporters, that is crucial.

“They want to see their heroes showing as much passion as they do. They want to see the same joy and pain they feel in 90 minutes.

“Jose did exactly that. And I’m delighted to see fortune and feelings starting to change in The Special One’s favour a little.”
