Jose Mourinho hailed Paul Pogba as "class" as the French midfielder inspired Manchester United to a 3-0 win over Young Boys in their Champions League opener.

Pogba scored twice, first with a terrific left-foot strike and then from the penalty spot, and also set up Anthony Martial's third.

Mourinho was glowing in his assessment of his captain's performance, and also praised Pogba for showing the bottle to take the penalty, after his miss against Burnley.

"It was a good performance," the BBC reports the Portuguese coach as saying. "[Pogba was] solid, class and gave the team the pace we needed at times. He controlled the tempo and of course it was a very good goal.

"The penalty showed personality too as sometimes when you miss one you have doubts but none for him."

Mourinho was also delighted by the performances of Luke Shaw and teenager Diogo Dalot, the summer signing from Porto, who made his United debut in the win.

"Both full-backs were very, very good," he said. "Very offensive and always eyes open. Very calm.

"Luke has been doing it since the start of the season and Diogo is one of the best young right-backs in Europe already. He is just 19 years old."
