Josh Charnley stretchered from the field after awful-looking incident
Josh Charnley has surpassed Danny McGuire's try-scoring haul to become Super League's second all-time leading scorer, but there are fears for the winger after he was stretchered from the field in Leigh Leopards' play-off clash with Salford Red Devils.
Charnley notched the 248th try of his Super League career in the game, overtaking the legendary halfback in the process as the Leopards defeated the Reds.
But Leigh now have concerns regarding his fitness after he was carried from the field after an innocuous incident. Charnley had chased a kick behind when he appeared to get his head stuck underneath the body of Ryan Brierley.
Charnley remained on the floor and barely moved before medical assistance soon arrived. After several minutes of treatment, the stretcher was called. It was a worrying visual for Leigh and Charnley, putting a dampener on another excellent individual landmark.
After the game, coach Adrian Lam told Sky Sports: "He's just on his way to hospital, he's in a brace and he's on his way there. But he's conscious, so just fingers crossed, he's OK."
McGuire had started the season as the competition leader but, is now in third, having also fallen behind his former Leeds team-mate, Ryan Hall. The current Hull KR winger remains top of the pile, six tries ahead of Charnley on 254.
The three are a long way ahead of the rest. Keith Senior and Paul Wellens are joint fourth on 199 while the top ten is made up of Jermaine McGillvary, Tommy Makinson, Ryan Atkins, Leon Pryce and Luke Dorn.
Charnley's latest try came at a pivotal point in the game, with Leugh taking the lead for the first time shortly after the break. It was his 18th try of the Super League season.
Former Wigan winger Charnley is younger than Hall, who will play for at least one more season after securing a return to Leeds Rhinos in 2025. Hall remains in action this season, with Hull KR set to take to the field next week in the semi-finals.
