Fifteen years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer was staked through the heart, she's rising from the grave. Not unlike Angel or Spike, actually!

It's not the revival starring Sarah Michelle Gellar that fans have been waiting for, but series creator Joss Whedon is finally working on a new TV version of Buffy with original production company 20th Century Fox Television (via Deadline).

Whedon is set to executive produce a reboot, and hand over writing duties to Monica Owusu-Breen, whose impressive CV includes Alias, Lost, Fringe and Marvel's Agents of SHIELD.

Their vision is in its early stages, but they are expected to cast a black lead actress as Buffy in order for the series to feel "richly diverse".

"Like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today," their description of the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer teases.

There were whispers that such a project could be in the works earlier this year when Fox TV group chair Gary Newman confirmed that a Buffy revival or reboot was something he discussed with Whedon "frequently".

Unfortunately for Fox, Sarah Michelle Gellar has always been reluctant to return for a Buffy revival series, while co-star David Boreanaz flatly said last year that he'd "never" take part in any type of reunion project.

Whedon has kept up the continuing story of the Buffyverse through a series of comics. He's also a very busy man these days, producing Freeform's detective series Pippa Smith: Grown-Up Detective and recently inking a huge deal with HBO to write his own Victorian-era Buffy the Vampire Slayer-esque series The Nevers.

20th Century Fox TV is expected to begin pitching its Buffy reboot to streaming services and cable channels this summer.
