Journalists in Pakistan March to Protest Censorship

Journalists marched in Islamabad and elsewhere in Pakistan on July 16 in protest against censorship of the press, and against layoffs in the industry, wage delays, and budget cuts.

This video shows a group of journalists, holding flags and a banner, walking out of the National Press Club building in Islamabad, and congregating in front of a monument dedicated to slain journalists.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said that Pakistan’s military “opposes independent journalism” and has exercised “brazen censorship” of local media.

According to Radio Free Europe, hundreds of journalists have been laid off in recent months, and several stations suspended from cable networks after broadcasting an opposition news conference. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Storyful
