Jude Law is seemingly trying to add as many major movie franchises as possible to his CV these days.

Shortly after fans got their first look at Jude as a "youthful" version of Harry Potter wizard Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, all signs point to him also joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Academy Award nominee is being lined up to play the leading male character opposite Brie Larson in the forthcoming Captain Marvel movie according to Variety, though Marvel Studios isn't commenting.

If a deal is reached, Law will play Carol Danvers' (Larson) mentor Dr. Walter Lawson - the civilian alter-ego of Mar-Vell, an elder of the alien species Kree. It's Lawson who helps Danvers control her own powers when her own Kree DNA manifests.

Marvel is also bringing back Samuel L. Jackson as SHIELD boss Nick Fury for an adventure set in the 1990s, before the main MCU timeline.

Together, this trio of heroes will battle the shapeshifting Skrull aliens, who will presumably be led by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Ben Mendelsohn.

In describing the film over the summer, Brie Larson said she was keen to explore the "female complexity" of Captain Marvel in a movie universe where every previous instalment has been headlined by a male hero.

"Aside from the fact that it's iconic to be part of this, to be playing the first female [lead] in a solo [Marvel] movie, I think for me personally one of the things I'm excited about is the idea of female complexity," she explained.

"That's what I've wanted to bring to every genre and every film that I've done. How can we come to understand the mystique of being female?"

Captain Marvel will be released on March 8, 2019.
