Julia Louis Dreyfus Will Become The Funniest Woman Ever With Another Emmy Win

No-one has come close to lighting up the small screen like Julia Louis-Dreyfus has done over the last 27 years. For those of you that can’t remember, Dreyfus shot to fame as Elaine Benes in ‘Seinfeld’ back in 1989, and while ‘The New Adventures Of Old Christine’ didn’t come close to reaching the heights of her antics with Jerry, George, Kramer et al she still excelled in the sitcom.

Yet it’s with ‘Veep’ that Julia Louis-Dreyfus could confirm her place as the funniest woman ever, as she’s already bagged her fifth consecutive nomination for her work as Selina Meyer, and now she’s hoping to turn that into her fifth consecutive award.

If she did win yet another Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series that would be her sixth in the last 11 years, as she previously picked up the gong in 2006 for the first season of ‘The New Adventures Of Old Christine’.

But Dreyfus’ period of domination goes beyond that. Between 1992 and 1998 Julia Louis Dreyfus was nominated for seven years on the trot in the Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series category, somehow only returning home with one actual win for her performances in 1996’s season 7.

Just to be clear, this means that Julia Louis Dreyfus already has six Emmy Awards and is odds on favourite to get her seventh, while, barring the first two seasons of ‘Seinfeld’, she’s also been nominated for every season of television that she’s starred in. That’s an unprecedented period of success.

So much so that if she did win her seventh award she would now have the most overall wins in the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series Emmy category ever, as it would see her usurp Candice Bergen and Mary Tyler Moore. While her fifth consecutive Emmy would see her best Helen Hunt’s four year streak between 1996 and 1999, which she won for her performances on ‘Mad About You.’

But Dreyfus has been so dominant and so specular in her eclectic leading roles that her legendary status has long been guaranteed. Another Emmy victory would just provide the definitive proof that would render discussions on the topic mute.

We’ll find out if she can do just that when the 2016 Emmys take place on September 18th.
