Julianne Moore Plots for Power in Steamy Trailer for Starz’s ‘Mary & George’

Starz has revealed the premiere date, key art and official trailer for the limited series Mary & George, a Sky Studios production that is an adaptation of Benjamin Wooley’s 2017 nonfiction book The King’s Assassin.

The 17th-century period drama, consisting of seven episodes, will air first on Sky in the U.K. on March 5 and go out on Starz in the U.S. on April 5 at 9 p.m., with episodes available to watch on the network’s streaming platform at midnight. Julianne Moore stars as Lady Mary Villers, the Countess of Buckingham, who encourages her son George (Red, White & Royal Blue‘s Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran), leading to a fatal attraction.

Set to a baroque version of The Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” the trailer features the countess explaining her motives behind seeking power through her son’s liaison: “I do not own my home. My children are unwed. We have nothing.” When she is told that if this became known, her position in society will become “untenable,” she urges her son to give “cock-struck” King James I “whatever he wants.” Meanwhile, the countess has her own string of steamy affairs with women.

The series is created and written by D.C. Moore (Killing Eve) who also serves as executive producer alongside Liza Marshall, Oliver Hermanus (who additionally worked as lead director) and Moore. Mary & George was originally set to air on AMC in the U.S. and Canada but was acquired by Starz in November. The series will air on Sky Atlantic in the U.K. Ireland, Italy and German-speaking Europe. NBCUniversal Global Distribution is handling international sales on behalf of Sky Studios.
