Justin Edinburgh: Leyton Orient manager dies aged 49 after cardiac arrest

Justin Edinburgh, who managed Leyton Orient and played for Tottenham Hotspur, has died aged 49 after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Orient chairman Nigel Travis said the club was "completely heartbroken by this tragedy", describing Edinburgh as a "wonderful, inspirational human being".

He was taken to hospital on Monday - two days after attending the Champions League final between Tottenham and Liverpool.

He "passed away on Saturday", Orient said in a statement, adding: "All our thoughts are with Justin's wife Kerri and their children Charlie and Cydnie at this very sad time."

Orient striker Macauley Bonne said there were "no words to describe the loss of our gaffer", adding that he "brought us all together".

Tottenham said it was "deeply saddened and shocked".

Darren Anderton, who played at Spurs with Edinburgh, said: "When you were around him, you just laughed and smiled constantly. RIP mate."

Former Tottenham captain Ledley King said he "saw Justin last week and he was in great shape and full of life", adding: "He was genuinely one of the nicest guys you could meet."

Glenn Hoddle said he was "devastated", while Gary Lineker said Edinburgh was a "terrific fullback who was a delight to share a dressing room with and have as a teammate".

Edinburgh joined Tottenham in 1990 after beginning his career at Southend United.

The left back went on to make 215 appearances for Spurs, and during a decade at White Hart Lane was part of both FA Cup and League Cup winning sides, in 1991 and 1999 respectively.

Edinburgh joined Leyton Orient in November 2017 and led the club back into the Football League as National League champions in the 2018-19 season.

Other clubs expressed their condolences after hearing the news.

AFC Rushden and Diamonds, who Edinburgh also managed, said he would be "greatly missed".

Clapton Community Football Club tweeted that it was "stunned and saddened by this devastating news".

Altrincham FC said it was "heartbreaking".
