In the early days of 2018, Justin Timberlake unveiled a new year, new him. The tease for his new album, Man of the Woods, depicted the artist rebranding as a country boy.

After years of appropriating hip-hop, R&B and black culture, Timberlake appeared to be entering some sort of lumberjack phase with songs like 'Flannel', 'Midnight Summer Jam' and 'Livin' Off the Land'. (Has JT ever been more than five minutes away from an Apple Store?) This was more Florida Georgia Line than Justin Timberlake. In fact, he even has a song with Chris Stapleton on the upcoming album.

It's a poorly timed shift, as his country has undergone a rather unpleasant narrative pivot with the election of Donald Trump.

But, here we are, two videos and two singles into the build-up for the new album, and there's no sign of Extremely Western Justin Timberlake.

Instead, both songs - the previously released 'Filthy' and the new 'Supplies' - are almost entirely the same Justin Timberlake we've known since the turn of the century, with lots of mouth noises and sexy falsetto.

And both videos have been science fiction-focused rather than showing Timberlake walking through some tall grass, ponderin' life. This new clip sees JT dancing through a fancy dystopian future. He watches some sad, woke TVs. He burns a pyramid. He attacks a crew of white alien dudes. He gets accosted by a gang of tough tweens in a post-apocalyptic hellscape.

Where is Definitely Can Ride a Horse Justin Timberlake? Where's the tent pitchin', trailer hitchin', good ol' boy we were promised? Was the Man of the Woods tease just a hilarious joke? A bait and switch? We sure do hope so.
