Juventus vs Chelsea - LIVE!

Chelsea have been left to stew on back-to-back losses after a frustrating night in the Champions League.

The Blues went to Turin for Wednesday’s Group H tie on matchday two hoping to bounce back from their first defeat of the season against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

However, despite dominating the resurgent Serie A giants for long spells, Chelsea could not breach an improved Juventus defence.

The holders were crucially caught sleeping at the start of the second period, with Federico Chiesa thumping home the only goal of the game past Edouard Mendy to seal a memorable win for the Bianconeri.

It was Chelsea’s first group stage loss for two years and only the second time under Thomas Tuchel that they have suffered back-to-back defeats.

Much work to do ahead of Saturday’s visit of Southampton to west London.

Thomas Tuchel reaction

23:02 , George Flood

Tuchel told BT Sport: “We struggled to create our own rhythm and intensity because they were so deep and passive. We were lacking runs.

“We were so good in training yesterday and not good enough, not free enough today. I don’t know why.

“I felt we were a bit slow and tired, mentally slow, decision-making. That’s why it’s a strange one to analyse.”

He added: “I think we started not sharp enough. The first 12 to 15 minutes we could have harmed them much more. There was so much space for dangerous balls into the box and ask more questions.

“At this level you cannot concede an easy goal like this in the first seconds of the second half. When you know what’s coming and you have defensive organisation like we have, normally it’s always possible to defend it. We got punished for it.”

Juve well worth that win. Back-to-back defeats for Chelsea and not too many excuses for it either.

Juventus 1-0 Chelsea

Chelsea lose back-to-back games for only the second time under Thomas Tuchel.

Chiesa’s strike 11 seconds after half-time settles it.

21:51 , George Flood

94 mins: Lukaku gets away from De Ligt but can’t get to the ball in time.

Then Chiellini slides in to divert Hudson-Odoi’s cross behind.

A huge chance for Havertz from the corner! But his header is just over.

21:48 , George Flood

92 mins: A lot of pace on that cross from Barkley, but it drifts wide.

Is there one final chance in this for Chelsea?

21:48 , George Flood

90 mins: Five minutes of added time for Chelsea to rescue this.

21:46 , George Flood

87 mins: That’s fine work from Hudson-Odoi to tee up Havertz, whose header fails to trouble Szczesny.

Chelsea running out of time here. Cuadrado booked for time-wasting as Juve earn a late corner.

21:44 , George Flood

84 mins: Panic in the Juve box as Chilwell lofts in a free-kick and Thiago Silva gets to the flick-on before Danilo.

Chiellini hooks clear at the back post, but there will be a VAR check for a penalty for a potential handball.

Check over. No spot-kick.

21:40 , George Flood

82 mins: The tempo and frantic nature of this game is remarkable for a group contest.

Barkley does well to feed Lukaku, who has a good sight of goal but leans back and lashes well wide.

He should have done much better with that.

Chiellini is on for Juve. Bentancur off.

21:37 , George Flood

80 mins: Kulusevski, Cuadrado and Kean link-up well with Chelsea suddenly under big pressure.

Kean makes room for a shot that is blocked by Rudiger.

Chelsea break, but Lukaku’s cross is overhit.

21:35 , George Flood

21:33 , George Flood

76 mins: Chalobah hangs up an inviting cross to the back post that is well taken by Szczesny.

Two more Juve changes: McKennie for Rabiot, Kean for Chiesa.

The goalscorer heads off.

21:31 , George Flood

75 mins: Much better from Chelsea as they finally arrow in a cross towards Lukaku, who heads well wide.

Barkley replaces Christensen.

21:30 , George Flood

73 mins: Less than 20,000 fans inside the Allianz Stadium tonight, according to BT Sport. Remarkable. The atmosphere has been good, particularly since Juve scored.

Ross Barkley is being prepared by Chelsea.

21:29 , George Flood

71 mins: Chelsea dominating possession once again but they just can’t create anything meaningful against this backline or get in behind.

They are looking for Hudson-Odoi a lot, but Juve have recognised that and are doubling up on the substitute out on that right flank.

21:25 , George Flood

James Robson at Allianz Stadium

21:23 , George Flood

This is one of those games where you wish you were at Stamford Bridge and could get closer to Tuchel on the touchline.

We’re up in the rafters at the Allianz Stadium, but can only imagine how frustrated he is down there.

21:22 , George Flood

65 mins: That proves to be Bernardeschi’s last involvement as he is replaced by Dejan Kulusevski.

21:20 , George Flood

63 mins: How is that not 2-0 to Juventus?! My word.

A howler of a miss from Bernardeschi after a great cross-field ball from Rabiot and a super first-time pass from Cuadrado.

An enormous let-off for Chelsea. Thiago Silva did just enough.

21:20 , George Flood

61 mins: A risky little nibble inside the box there from Alex Sandro on Havertz, but that’s not a penalty.

Ziyech, Azpilicueta and Jorginho replaced by Hudson-Odoi, Chalobah and Loftus-Cheek.

21:17 , George Flood

59 mins: This is a decent spell from Chelsea just before the hour mark, they force a couple of corners in quick succession and sustain some good pressure.

But Juve are still defending solidly, with Azpilicueta then fouling Alex Sandro.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are going to be coming on for Chelsea soon.

Trevoh Chalobah too, actually. An imminent triple change from Tuchel.

James Robson at Allianz Stadium

21:15 , George Flood

Chelsea are trying to turn up the tempo and harass Juve in their own third. Right now that looks as good a chance as any of opening them up.

It looks like it will need an error, rather than any sort of move on Chelsea’s part.

21:14 , George Flood

56 mins: Juve complain bitterly to the Spanish referee after a naughty-looking challenge on De Ligt.

Just a free-kick.

The home fans now making great noise.

21:12 , George Flood

54 mins: Typically great anticipation from Bonucci to cut out a low through ball intended for the run of Lukaku.

Bonucci has been struggling a bit since being cleared out by Szczesny when the goalkeeper punched clear a little earlier.

21:11 , George Flood

52 mins: Bonucci of all people has just embarked on a surging run forward for Juve, but he is eventually stopped by Rudiger.

Locatelli then breathes a sigh of relief as Havertz tries to play a one-two with Kovacic and the ball deflects dangerously off the Italy midfielder and behind for a corner.

21:10 , George Flood

21:07 , George Flood

48 mins: A bit of a risky barge from Jorginho on Bernardeschi just outside the Chelsea box. Nothing given.

Chelsea look to hit back quickly but Juve hold them off, with Chiellini now sent to warm up down the touchline by Allegri.

GOAL! Juventus 1-0 Chelsea | Federico Chiesa 46'

21:02 , George Flood

46 mins: Juventus strike just 11 seconds into the second half!

It’s a lovely little blindside run in the box and the impressive Chiesa thumps an unstoppable effort beyond the helpless Mendy.

Chelsea caught completely cold after the break. Tuchel will be fuming.

James Robson at Allianz Stadium

21:02 , George Flood

Another half-time sub by Tuchel. This is becoming a habit. At what point is it not a case of in-game management, but getting it wrong in the first place?

21:01 , George Flood

Chelsea are making a half-time change.

Ben Chilwell is coming on for Alonso.

James Robson at Allianz Stadium

20:49 , George Flood

Half-time. Chelsea must do better.

Half-time

20:47 , George Flood

Juventus 0-0 Chelsea

Goalless at the interval.

Chelsea with so much possession but they have failed to break down their stubborn opponents, who have looked dangerous every time they have countered and had the better chances.

20:46 , George Flood

45 mins: Alonso’s corner is headed down by Thiago Silva, who then unleashes a fierce strike that is brilliantly blocked by De Ligt.

In the next phase of attack, Silva tries to head a ball back across the box but the whistle has gone for a push.

20:44 , George Flood

43 mins: Nothing doing for one-dimensional Chelsea yet again and Juventus are starting to enjoy some possession of their own now.

They will have grown a lot in confidence as this first half has worn on, but now have a corner to defend after Danilo’s tackle on Lukaku.

20:43 , George Flood

41 mins: That’s a dangerous low ball into the six-yard box, but Mendy does well to get down and hold it.

That was not easy for the Chelsea goalkeeper.

20:42 , George Flood

39 mins: Juve look so purposeful when they seize on a mistake and they have a free-kick in a great position just outside the D after Cuadrado is clumsily felled by Kovacic.

Both sets of players form a wall and Bernardeschi’s powerful drive hits Rabiot.

What a bizarre approach from the hosts, who have another useful free-kick on the left after Chiesa is blocked off by Rudiger.

James Robson at Allianz Stadium

20:40 , George Flood

Chelsea have had 74 per cent of the possession, yet it is Juve who have by far had the better openings.

They look dangerous every time they go forward.

20:40 , George Flood

38 mins: A long ball up towards Lukaku inadvertently bounces off the back of the Belgian striker and wide.

Just about sums up Chelsea’s attacking approach in this first half.

20:37 , George Flood

35 mins: Jorginho loses the ball for Chelsea but battles hard to win it back and goes down holding his face after being caught by a stray arm from Rabiot.

Free-kick, nothing more.

Nothing at all happening for the Blues at the moment, despite their superior possession.

Lukaku’s early shot still their only effort of any note in this first half.

James Robson at Allianz Stadium

20:34 , George Flood

With better finishing, Chelsea could be at least two down here. Juve’s tactics are working, but for the finish.

20:32 , George Flood

30 mins: Another warning for Chelsea from Rabiot, who has Azpilicueta floundering as he cuts inside from the left and rifles off a powerful shot that whistles not too far over the crossbar.

20:30 , George Flood

28 mins: Szczesny confidently claims Azpilicueta’s latest cross before Juve try another ball over the top to release Chiesa, but the offside flag is raised after Danilo’s inventive pass.

Coming up on half an hour, still goalless. A decent run from Havertz is stopped in its tracks.

20:28 , George Flood

26 mins: Chelsea can’t fashion a chance as Kovacic tries to play off Lukaku and there is a superb challenge on Havertz.

At the other end, Bernardeschi’s low pass nutmegs Christensen, but Chiesa doesn’t get an effort on target.

20:26 , George Flood

24 mins: Back to Chelsea monopolising possession - now at 71 per cent - and Juve content to sit back, keep their rigid shape and wait for another chance to spring forward on the counter.

The visitors need to move it quicker and be more creative, exploiting those wide areas.

They are just playing in front of Juventus at the moment.

James Robson at Allianz Stadium

20:24 , George Flood

There’s the evidence of Juve’s threat on the break. On three occasions they’ve found themselves in threatening positions, but haven’t taken advantage.

Chiesa should have at least hit the target then, but dragged his shot wide. Chelsea have been warned.

20:21 , George Flood

20 mins: The clearest chance of the night so far is for Juventus.

Kovacic needlessly gives the ball away and Chiesa is on it in a flash, driving forward before whipping a fierce shot across Mendy’s goal and narrowly wide from a tough angle.

A big warning for Chelsea.

20:19 , George Flood

18 mins: Alonso pushes former Chelsea man Cuadrado in the back of the head and into the advertising hoardings after the duo tussle for a loose ball which goes beyond the byline.

Cuadrado made the most of it, but a silly thing to do from Alonso and he receives the first yellow card of the evening.

Needless.

20:18 , George Flood

17 mins: Ziyech and Lukaku combine inside the box, but Juventus, to their credit, have defended stoutly thus far.

Not often you could have said that so far this season.

20:17 , George Flood

15 mins: One such chance for a decent Juve counter is botched after a really poor pass from Rabiot.

James Robson at Allianz Stadium

20:16 , George Flood

Chelsea are dictating the rhythm early on, with Juve prepared to defend deep and hit on the counter.

Havertz and Ziyech are finding spaces to drop into, but it is only the Lukaku chance from a short corner that has forced a save so far.

20:15 , George Flood

15 mins: Now Christensen tries to feed a powerful low pass into the feet of Lukaku in the box, but it’s inaccurate and rolls straight through to Szczesny.

20:15 , George Flood

13 mins: Chelsea dominating possession here and probing patiently for an opening.

Alonso’s drilled cross is seen off by Locatelli.

20:13 , George Flood

11 mins: Ziyech is very eager to impress here, buzzing around the place and harrassing Juve on the ball wherever possible.

He just needs to take it down a notch as that’s a couple of free-kicks he has given away already, the latest on Locatelli.

20:11 , George Flood

10 mins: Alonso aims a dangerous free-kick from the right after Juve are whistled for handball, but it’s over the head of Thiago Silva, who is expertly nudged out of the way inside the box.

20:10 , George Flood

8 mins: Chelsea give the ball away sloppily for the first time and Juventus look to seize on the error, with Bernardeschi going down just outside the box after what looked like a very well-timed tackle from Kovacic.

Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano is perfectly happy with that challenge, as he should be.

20:08 , George Flood

6 mins: Chelsea look very sharp and positive on the ball here as Havertz orchestrates some nifty link-up play just inside the box.

They earn a corner and work a nice training ground routine, but Lukaku can’t get the appropriate power on his low drive that is held by Szczesny.

A promising start from the defending champions.

James Robson at Allianz Stadium

20:05 , George Flood

By my reckoning, this is the team Tuchel should have started against City - save for Kante, who is out with Covid.

But let’s see how they do here. They certainly can’t afford to leave the same amount of space between midfield and attack as they did on Saturday. Lukaku and Werner were starved of the ball.

And when they did get it, they were desperately undersupported.

Havertz should occupy ground in-between and come and collect the ball.

20:04 , George Flood

3 mins: Juventus can’t competently clear Azpilicueta’s probing cross from the right flank and Kovacic should do better as a miscued effort from the edge of the box is easily gathered by ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny.

20:03 , George Flood

2 mins: Early danger for Chelsea as a fine low ball is threaded into the space in behind for Bernardeschi, who races onto it before being flagged offside.

Christensen then makes a firm challenge on Chiesa.

Kick-off

20:01 , George Flood

Initial whistles for both sets of players taking a knee before a smattering of applause.

We are underway in Turin.

19:58 , George Flood

Here come the teams at the Allianz Stadium.

Time for that iconic Champions League anthem, with Juve’s excited fans bellowing out the final word.

A good atmosphere building.

FT: Zenit 4-0 Malmo

19:50 , George Flood

It’s all over in Russia, where Zenit have thumped Malmo 4-0 in tonight’s other Group H clash.

Second-half goals from Daler Kuzyaev, Aleksei Sutormin and Wendel turned a narrow half-time lead into a rout, with Malmo reduced to 10 men when Bosnian centre-back Anel Ahmedhodzic was dismissed eight minutes after the break.

Zenit stay third in the group, but level on points with Chelsea and Juventus ahead of kick-off in Turin.

Malmo bottom after a second heavy loss.

Jorginho milestone

19:42 , George Flood

Juventus, it might surprise you to learn despite their post-Ronaldo transitional phase and recent poor form, have gone 20 games now without a clean sheet.

Only one of their old masters starts at the back tonight, with Bonucci partnering De Ligt at centre-back and Chiellini on the bench.

19:32 , George Flood

Much has been made this week of Romelu Lukaku’s record against Juventus.

He won just one of six games against them with Inter Milan, scoring only once.

Can he improve those figures in Turin tonight?

Juventus team news

Moise Kean is only a substitute for Juve, who also make three changes from the win over Sampdoria.

The fit-again Adrien Rabiot is back in midfield, with Allegri having called the Frenchman’s goal tally “unacceptable” this week, while Danilo also starts and Wojciech Szczesny is back in goal at the expense of Mattia Perin after being rested.

Federico Chiesa leads the attack - supported by Federico Bernadeschi - with no recognised out-and-out striker. No Aaron Ramsey, either.

Only six outfield subs named by Allegri.

Teams in full

19:01 , George Flood

Juventus: Szczesny, Danilo, Bonucci, de Ligt, Alex Sandro, Cuadrado, Bentancur, Locatelli, Rabiot, Bernardeschi, Chiesa

Subs: De Sciglio, Chiellini, McKennie, Kean, Pinsoglio, Rugani, Perin, Kulusevski

Chelsea: Mendy, Christensen, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kovacic, Alonso, Ziyech, Havertz, Lukaku

Subs: Arrizabalaga, Werner, Loftus-Cheek, Bettinelli, Chalobah, Saul, Barkley, Hudson-Odoi, Chilwell, Sarr

Three Chelsea changes

19:01 , George Flood

So that’s three changes for Chelsea from the defeat by Manchester City.

Thiago Silva deputises for the injured Reece James, as he did on Saturday, while N’Golo Kante (Covid) and Timo Werner make way for Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech.

Still no start for Ben Chilwell, meanwhile.

Chiellini: Juventus need no extra motivation

18:53 , George Flood

This probably won’t come as a surprise, but Italy warhorse Chiellini insists Juventus need no extra motivation for a big European clash on this scale.

“It was easy to prepare the game, the coach has told us the same thing,” he said. “These are very nice games, you can prepare them easily.

“We’€™ll be playing home against the European champions, it will be challenging.”

Allegri: Juventus must take the game to Chelsea

18:25 , George Flood

Speaking at his own pre-match press conference yesterday, Juventus boss Max Allegri stressed the need for his players to take the game to Chelsea.

"You need to apply pressure but you have to play well," he said. "You can't play 95 minutes under pressure. When you have the ball you have to breathe to build and recover immediately.

"They are strong on the counter attack, they are strong in dead balls. It will be difficult to find gaps and we will have to be good all over the pitch.

"We will need patience, but we will have to have fun. We have improved in recent games. The emotion is natural. In front of us we have a team where if you make mistakes, you are punished."

The absences of Morata and Dybala mean that ex-Everton forward Moise Kean will likely play as a lone striker for Juve tonight, supported by highly-rated Italy winger Federico Chiesa.

Allegri said: “He (Kean) has to play and score. One thing he knows how to do well is scoring. He has to improve when he has to play with the team, in terms of individual technique.”

18:20 , George Flood

There has been a first-half goal in the early Group H kick-off in Russia, meanwhile.

Zenit lead Malmo 1-0 courtesy of an effort from Brazilian forward Luiz Claudinho.

Chelsea’s need for speed against old masters Bonucci and Chiellini

18:12 , George Flood

More than 72 hours after Chelsea’s first defeat of the season, Thomas Tuchel was still stewing over what went wrong against Manchester City, writes James Robson.

But the German has little time to lick his wounds, with tonight’s Champions League clash at Juventus representing another daunting challenge.

Tuchel got it wrong on Saturday — and ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Turin, he seemed more prepared to accept that possibility than in the immediate aftermath of the game.

“Of course we analysed,” he said. “We were not happy with our defensive [performance]. We were too passive against Manchester City.

“The defensive choices, the defensive plan and my responsibility maybe led to this passive behaviour. That was not the plan.”

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

It was rare to see Tuchel fail to come up with the solutions against Pep Guardiola. His ability to outmanoeuvre opponents has been the key feature of his time at Chelsea — not least in the Champions League, which is where his focus switches to tonight at Juve’s Allianz Stadium.

The Italian giants are not the force they once were but at the back they have the bedrock of Italy’s Euro 2020 success in defensive stalwarts Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

Tuchel: Chelsea have a target on their backs

18:01 , George Flood

Thomas Tuchel has warned that Chelsea will be seen as a big scalp to most teams in this competition following their success last year, start to this season and the £97.5million club-record arrival of Romelu Lukaku over the summer.

Do they have a target on their backs?

“It’s hard to be seen as an underdog when you just won the title,” Tuchel said. “Now it is, of course, easy to make us the favourites. We have the experience that there’s a higher value to play against us, there’s a higher motivation to play against us.

“We have to accept this, it’s our fault. We have won this competition.”

 (Chelsea FC via Getty Images)
(Chelsea FC via Getty Images)

He added: “It’s no secret we like this role to come from an outsider or challenger for this title, which we still are.

“I don’t think we are the favourites but we showed the performances we’re capable of. And that’s now on us. It’s important that we make ourselves free from these expectations, and these expectations do not become our expectations and we stay realistic.”

Standard Sport prediction

17:52 , George Flood

Both managers have significant injury problems going into a clash that will - along with the reverse at Stamford Bridge - likely end up deciding who finishes top of Group H.

Chelsea’s incredible squad depth could come to the fore but you sense a draw would not be a bad result at all for Tuchel’s men.

Juventus 1-1 Chelsea

Juventus team news: Dybala and Morata both out

17:51 , George Flood

Juventus could be toothless in attack tonight with top scorers Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata (formerly of Chelsea, of course) both injured.

Dybala scored an excellent early goal in the 3-2 Serie A win over Sampdoria at the weekend before limping off with a muscle issue, while Morata was also forced out of that game.

Both players are not expected back until after the international break.

Adrien Rabiot is now fit, but ex-Barcelona midfielder Arthur Melo is out.

Chelsea team news: No Kante, James, Mount or Pulisic

17:46 , George Flood

Chelsea are without the quartet of N’Golo Kante, Reece James, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic tonight.

Kante has tested positive for Covid-19, while Mount is still sidelined with the “minor” knock that saw him sit out against Manchester City on Saturday.

James was forced off in the first half of that 1-0 loss with an ankle injury and is expected to be out for at least another week.

Meanwhile, Pulisic is still recovering from the ankle issue he sustained on international duty with the United States earlier this month.

Chelsea probable XI (3-4-2-1): Mendy; Christensen, Silva, Rudiger; Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kovacic, Chilwell; Ziyech, Havertz; Lukaku

Welcome to Juventus vs Chelsea live coverage

17:30 , George Flood

Good evening and welcome to Standard Sport’s live coverage of another heavyweight clash on matchday two of the 2021/22 Champions League.

After all the fun of PSG vs Manchester City, tonight’s main event comes from Turin, where Chelsea face arguably the most difficult early test of their Champions League title defence against Juventus at the Allianz Stadium.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are looking to bounce back from that defeat by Manchester City - their first of the season - and build on the opening Group H win over Zenit, though they are notably understrength without some key players, particularly in midfield.

Juventus are now notably light up front, meanwhile, but have recovered after a dreadful start to the season in the aftermath of Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit, winning back-to-back games in Serie A amid a four-match unbeaten run. They also eased past Malmo in their UCL opener.

Stay tuned for match build-up, latest team news and live updates, with James Robson providing expert analysis from Turin.
