The crowd at Hershey, Pennsylvania’s Giant Center cheered as American Hockey League players Kale Kessy and Derek Sheppard came to blows on Tuesday, February 25, shortly before Kessy was knocked unconscious and taken to the hospital for observation.
Hershey Bears enforcer Kale Kessy was transported to the Hershey Medical Center on Tuesday after the fight with the Charlotte Checkers’ Derek Sheppard.
Matthew Moulton took this video of the incident, which occurred during the second period of the Checkers-Bears game.
After Sheppard knocked Kessy out, medical staff rushed out and the game was halted for 45 minutes. Kessy was removed on a stretcher.
The Hershey Bears said he was alert and stable before he left the ice, telling his team to “go win the game.”
The Bears won 6-1 against the Checkers.
According to NBC Sports, hockey is the only professional sport in which fighting is allowed. “Though technically against the rules, two players fighting on the ice will only net those players five minutes in the penalty box rather than a lengthy suspension,” the website said.
