Kanye West To Headline Glastonbury Festival

Kanye West To Headline Glastonbury Festival

Kanye West has been confirmed as one of this year's headline acts at the Glastonbury Festival.

It will be the US rap superstar's first appearance at the world-famous music event, which takes place between 24 and 28 June.

West will top the bill on the Saturday night, performing on the main Pyramid Stage.

The news was revealed on Twitter by organiser Emily Eavis, daughter of festival founder Michael Eavis.

She tweeted: "We are thrilled to let you know we have the one and only Kanye West headlining Saturday night on the Pyramid stage!"

West, in the UK charts with his track FourFive Seconds, which includes Rihanna and Sir Paul McCartney, is the latest big name to be confirmed.

Foo Fighters will headline the Pyramid Stage on the Friday, making their first appearance at the Somerset festival since 1998.

Lionel Richie is also appearing, while the full line-up is due to be revealed in the spring.

In 2008, there was controversy after Jay-Z became the first hip-hop act to headline the event.

Ex-Oasis man Noel Gallagher said it was "wrong" to have him as the showpiece performer at the event, which has traditionally featured rock acts in the main slots.

Gallagher said: "Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music... I don't know about it. But I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong."

Despite the naysayers, Jay-Z's performance whipped up the crowd and received positive reviews.

Three years later, his wife, Beyonce, also pulled off a show-stopping headline turn at the festival.

Tickets for this year's event have been sold out since October but a resale is planned in April for any cancelled and returned tickets.
