Plans for Kanye West’s Wyoming ranch reportedly include a “urine garden” using human waste to feed plants.

The artist spoke to The Wall Street Journal Magazine for a newly unveiled cover story.

Among other topics, West discussed plans for the sprawling estate, which consists of two properties purchased in the fall.

According to The Wall Street Journal Magazine, one diagram drawn as part of the designs for the ranch includes a “urine garden”, which the publication describes as an “aquaponic-like system that converts human waste into plant food”.

West also mentioned to the magazine a shower system relying on a ”hydrogen pulse detonation pump”.

Helvi Heinonen-Tanski, an environmental scientist, told Scientific American in 2020 that urine can be used to fertilise plants.

“It is totally possible to use human urine as a fertiliser instead of industrial fertiliser,” Heinonen-Tanski told the publication.

According to Scientific American, that is because urine contains high levels of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus – primary ingredients in common fertilisers.
