Steven Moffat's departure from Doctor Who this Christmas marks the end of an era – and now Karen Gillan has paid tribute to the man who cast her as Amy Pond eight years ago.

Gillan is currently starring in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and told Digital Spy that both Moffat and her former co-star Arthur Darvill attended the film's London premiere to support her.

"I was happy about that – it was like a Pond reunion!" she told us.

Of Moffat's impending exit, Gillan said: "I can't believe he's leaving. I think he's ready to finish, though, because I think he's ready to be a fanboy again, and that's sort of what he said to me. He was like, 'I just cannot wait to watch this as a fan'."

Like her old boss, Gillan now watches Doctor Who as a fan. "I haven't caught up, but whenever I'm home, I can't wait for the Christmas special. That's all I want to do at Christmas. I'm not leaving my house because that's on!

"So yeah, I definitely appreciate it now as a fan, and I love Pearl [Mackie, who plays companion Bill Potts]. I think that she's brilliant, and I'm so excited to see what Jodie [Whittaker] does as well."

Gillan played companion Amy Pond from 2010 to 2012, making a brief return in 2013 for Matt Smith's own exit as the Eleventh Doctor.

She named her first and last stories as a main cast member – both written by Moffat – as her favourite episodes from her tenure.

"I love 'The Eleventh Hour' more than anything – the first one that me and Matt did, just because I think that Steven Moffat had that story ready to go from when he was a child. So it's pretty much a perfect story and a perfectly constructed script.

"I just think there's such a particular magic to that episode because everything was new, and my little cousin played the younger version of me in it, and she made everyone fall in love with my character.

"I've got to choose my last episode [too] – 'The Angels Take Manhattan'. Yeah, that one, definitely. That's genuinely one of my favourites, too. The first one and the last one!"

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle will be released on December 20.
