Karen Matthews called nurses “Hitlers” after they refused to give her a private room in a hospital because she didn’t want to be recognised, it has been reported.

The 43-year-old, who was convicted of kidnapping her daughter Shannon in a case that shocked the nation, ranted at staff and patients at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, the Sun reported.

It said Matthews demanded a private room during a visit to the hospital out of fear the public would know who she was.

When staff refused her request and insisted she wait in line, she ranted that nurses were “f****** Hitlers”, the Sun said.

She reportedly insulted an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer’s, telling his family: “Take him away, he’s giving me a headache.”

It reported that Matthews was in hospital seeking treatment for “complications” after undergoing surgery three weeks ago.

A patient told the Sun: ““They told her she would have to wait like everyone else and she went crazy.”

Matthews was eventually seen by a doctor and sent home.

She was sentenced to eight years in prison after being arrested in 2008 after her daughter Shannon, then nine, went missing.

She was released in 2012 after serving half her sentence.

Shannon was taken from her home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, which led to a month-long search by police.

Shannon was found on March 14 at the flat of accomplice Michael Donovan in nearby Batley Carr, having been drugged and kept in a small compartment under a bed.

Matthews is now living under a different identity.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital said: “We are aware of the situation. We have a zero-tolerance approach to disruption. We are very sorry to anyone who suffered distress.”
