Judge Dredd fans were very happy when the 2012 film turned out to be really darn good, but its underperformance at the box office dashed hopes of a sequel.

However, the dream isn't necessarily dead, with Rebellion Productions working on a TV series called Judge Dredd: Mega-City One that may or may not be set in the same universe.

It's all in the very early stages at the moment, but our excitement levels have tripled with the news that Karl Urban, who played the title role in 2012, is open to donning the helmet again for some more chin acting.

Speaking to ScreenRant while promoting Thor: Ragnarok, Urban said: "I've had many discussions with [Rebellion] about my involvement of which I am interested, and I said to them, 'Listen, if you write a character that has a function and a purpose and contributes to the overall story, then I might be very interested in reprising that role.'

"I certainly wouldn't want to step into it and just pay lip service to the movie.

"There has to be some material there that warrants further exploration of that character. So the ball's in their court."

The producers previously said that they'd love to have Urban (who has shared news about the show on social media) back, and that they have an "insane" and "macabre" dark fantasy vision for it.

Karl Urban will next be seen in Thor: Ragnarok, which will be released in UK cinemas on October 24 and US cinemas on November 3. Watch the trailer below:
