Kate Garraway has issued an apology to last year's Strictly Come Dancing finalist, Bobby Brazier, for her daughter's behaviour at the National Television Awards - after the teenager approached Bobby at an awkward moment.

It was a "bittersweet" evening for Good Morning Britain presenter Kate, and her two teenage children, on Wednesday, as they attended the television awards ceremony for the first time since the passing of their husband and father, Derek Draper, earlier this year.

But amongst the difficult milestone, 18-year-old Darcey Draper was excited to be surrounded by so many famous faces, with mum-of-two Kate saying her eldest was eagerly trying to snap selfies with celebrities at the event.

And one unfortunate moment came when Darcey excitedly approached 21-year-old Bobby Brazier - as he was queuing to go to the toilet.

Kate, 57, recounted the anecdote on her radio show on Smooth radio, as she said: "Let's talk NTAs."

She delved into her emotions saying she was "completely overwhelmed" yet feeling "so grateful" for clinching the documentary award that throws a spotlight on the care system, according to the Mirror. She went on to say: "As for Darcey and Billy, they were so proud of their dad."

However, Kate then explained: "Although Darcey was also very over-excited, running everywhere nobbling Love Islanders and reality stars for photos. Lovely to see her having fun. But particular apologies must go to Bobby Brazier, who she actually interrupted while he was queuing for the loo! Poor soul. He was very nice about it."

This year's NTAs saw Kate triumph as she took home the Best Authored Documentary accolade for 'Derek's Story' at the ceremony, held in London's O2 Arena on Wednesday (September 11). The deeply personal documentary covers what has been expressed as the 'final chapter' with her late husband Derek.

Derek tragically died in January 2024 from long-term complications following his Covid-19 diagnosis. A respected political lobbyist from Chorley, Derek battled several severe health issues due to the virus, including kidney failure, brain inflammation, and liver damage.

Kate expressed her surprise and mixed emotions during her acceptance speech, saying: "I really genuinely did not expect this, goodness me. This is a bittersweet one isn't it? It's very bitter to be here, with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy."

She continued, reflecting on the difficult milestones without her husband: "I promised them they didn't have to say anything. We're halfway through the first year of firsts really. A first Easter and first birthdays, without Derek. It's so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him."

The news of her husband's passing was shared by Kate on January 3 in an Instagram post, which stated: "I'm sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications."

In her message, she also conveyed her presence during his final moments: "Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed.

"I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible."

Kate concluded with a heartfelt goodbye and gratitude: "Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life."
