Kate Garraway sends love to husband Derek Draper after he responded to 'GMB'

Kate Garraway has sent an emotional message of love to her husband Derek Draper, as she revealed nurses believe he has responded to watching Good Morning Britain.

The TV presenter – whose husband remains in a coma after almost dying from coronavirus – admitted it had been a “tough week” with Draper facing blood clot concerns.

But Garraway opened the ITV breakfast show on Tuesday saying: "It really is good morning to everyone, it really is yeah. As you know Derek had a tough week last week, that's the one thing we're all having to face.

"He had a tough week, he had two big falls in blood pressure and also swelling in his legs with the concern that it might be clots it was very, very emotional.

"He has had clots in his lungs … I suppose the concern would be is if it was new clots forming."

The 53-year-old former I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! contestant added: "He’s stable and yesterday I spoke to nurses and they said they have put GMB on and they felt he looked at it, cos his eyes are open he looked focused and engaged.

"I found it very emotional, we don’t know if it was the movement or the light, so good morning Derek if you are watching, we're all sending you lots of love."

Garraway has returned to work on GMB last week after more than 100 days supporting her husband through his COVID-19 battle.

Draper, 52, contracted the virus in March and is now in a minimal state of consciousness after he failed to recover from a medically induced coma.

Garraway and her children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, have been limited in their contact with Draper due to coronavirus quarantine restrictions, but they are able to speak to him on Facetime everyday.

Billy celebrated his 11th birthday at the weekend, but Garraway has promised him they will have another birthday celebration when his father has recovered.

She said: "Billy absolutely loved it, he was completely overwhelmed.

"He was emotional too of course, but I said we were gonna do it all again when Derek gets back."

Garraway and Draper, 52, have been married since 2005.
