TV star Kate Garraway has opened up about her "bittersweet" feelings as she embarked on a holiday to the West Country, a trip that comes five months following the death of her husband, Derek Draper. The Good Morning Britain host took her children to Cornwall, continuing what she calls an "annual tradition".

In a heartfelt post to her Instagram followers, Kate showcased a video of her fully loaded car before setting off for Cornwall. She expressed that the journey was tinged with sadness, noting that the spacious Volvo would have been ideal for her late husband, as it had "plenty of room for a hoist and wheelchair in the back".

Derek Draper passed away at 56 years old in January after suffering severe complications from Covid. Despite the sorrow, Garraway conveyed her enthusiasm for the getaway, mentioning that this was the first time she had a car since her last Volvo was stolen two years ago.

In an Instagram video, Garraway said: “So, first trip to Cornwall, our annual family trip, with mum, dad, about 30 other Garraways - beware Cornwall. The first time I have done it in my lovely new Volvo, so excited.”

And she joked: “So we have got four suitcases, for four adults, we’ve got quite a lot of extra food because they don’t sell food in Cornwall, so it’s important we take it with us. And we have a cool box full of lots of things for the fridge, my mum likes to take, a little bit of alcohol, and lots of art stuff that my mum likes to do with the nieces and nephews and the little ones.

“So, we’re good to go. I can still see over the back. Oh, gosh, I forgot, three surfboards as well. Brilliant.”

In order to honour the occasion, the 57-year-old asked fans for their help in naming her new ride, reports Cornwall Live. She said on social media: “We haven’t had a car since Vickie Volvo was stolen and Percy Peugeot had to go back but thanks to some amazing friends who’ve helped me loan a brand new @volvocaruk C90 - I absolutely love it! Not an advert, just a passion.

“Feels like old times with hands on an @volvocars wheel, although bitter sweet as this would have been the perfect car to carry Derek in and out of with plenty of room for a hoist and wheelchair in the back.

“But I know he would approve and it’s come just in time to take my mum and dad away on our annual Cornwall trip with all the Garraways. Dad slightly tense about me driving but relieved that it beeps everytime near an obstacle. Now just have to find a name for it? Hope everyone is having a lovely Saturday xxx.”

Fans rushed to comment on the post, suggesting Garraway honour her late husband by naming the car after him. One person wrote: “You should call the car Derek as he would have loved it , and hope you and Darcey and Billy and the rest of the family have a brilliant chilled relaxed holiday you all deserve x.”

Another person said: “Hope you all have an amazing time together OK so name for Volvo so as you have already said Derek would have approved and like it there you go name it after Derekxx.”.

A third posted: “Have a fabulous time, call the car after Derek x,” while a fourth social media user said: “If you had a nickname for Derek that might be a good one.”

Yet another fan of the ITV presenter posted: “A name with Derek in mind would be nice.” Garraway gave fans a video tour of her new car featuring her father, who could be seen standing beside the boot.
