Kate Middleton will be hospitalized for up to 2 weeks after surgery, Kensington Palace announces

  • Kate Middleton had a planned abdominal surgery, Kensington Palace said.

  • The palace said she's going to stay in the hospital for up to two weeks during her recovery.

  • The palace said the Princess of Wales is "unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, will be sidelined for at least 10 days after having abdominal surgery, Kensington Palace announced on Instagram on Wednesday.

Kensington Palace said the surgery was planned and happened on Tuesday.

"The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery," Kensington Palace said in a statement to Business Insider. "Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

Kensington Palace said the Princess of Wales wants to "maintain as much normality for her children as possible" and asked that her "personal medical information remains private."

"Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness' progress when there is significant new information to share," the statement said.

"The Princess of Wales wishes to apologize to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements," Kensington Palace added. "She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."

The announcement came shortly before Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III would be heading to the hospital himself to seek treatment for an enlarged prostate.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement to BI that Charles' condition was "benign."

"As is common with thousands of men each year, The King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate. His Majesty's condition is benign and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure," the statement said.

It added that Charles' public engagements will be postponed for a "short period" as he recovers.

Kate made her last public appearance on Christmas, People reported.

On Christmas, Charles and Kate walked to church with Prince William and other royal family members.

Kate's surgery also comes shortly after she celebrated her 42nd birthday.

To mark the occasion, the royal family shared birthday wishes for the Princess of Wales in an X post accompanied by a photograph of her interacting with King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Prince Edward during the coronation in May 2023.

Vanity Fair reported that birthday celebrations were "low key," and involved a private gathering of family at her home in Windsor, where she is likely to return following her hospital release.

Together with their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, William and Kate relocated from Kensington Palace in London to Adelaide Cottage within the Windsor Home Park in 2022.
