The Prince and Princess of Wales have just shocked social media with an unexpected message wishing Prince Harry a happy 40th birthday. It comes after Kate Middleton's personal and emotional video of her and her family following the news that she had completed her chemotherapy treatment.

It is first time that the couple have wished him a happy birthday publicly in three years, following what is believed to be a large amount of unresolved tension with him and Megan Markle. But William and Kate extended the olive branch on Sunday, September 15, quoting a message first posted by the royal family on X.

They even used their own caption, writing: “Wishing a Happy 40th Birthday to The Duke of Sussex!” For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter

The post from the royal family account was also the first public birthday message for Harry since 2021, the year that he and Meghan appeared in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Harry, who lives in California, spent his birthday at his California home with Meghan and their two children, before reportedly heading away to meet with close friends. Harry, who moved away from being a working royal in 2020 is believed to be estranged from William and has a strained relationship with their father, King Charles, with known visits being minimal during the recent years.

Although he flew to the UK to see the king after his cancer diagnosis, the meeting was kept to just 45 minutes. Harry also travelled to London in May to celebrate a decade of his Invictus Games and attended a service at St Paul’s Cathedral but did not meet up with William or the king at this time, and he also returned briefly to the UK in August for the funeral of his uncle Lord Fellowes, although there was reportedly no interaction with William at the church service, which their father could not attend.

In Harry's book, Spare, he made a number of claims which shocked readers, including the allegation that his brother physically attacked him during an argument about the Duchess of Sussex, noting that the Prince of Wales called the Duchess “difficult”, “rude”, and “abrasive” before grabbing his brother by the collar.
