Katie Hopkins has caused outrage on Twitter after referencing the Holocaust in a post about the Manchester terror attack.

22 people have been confirmed dead, including children, with at least 59 others injured after an explosion at Ariana Grande's concert at the Manchester Arena last night (May 22), with police treating it as a terrorist incident.

In a tweet that has since been deleted, Hopkins wrote: "22 dead - number rising. Schofield. Don't you even dare. Do not be part of the problem. We need a final solution."

The reference to This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield is about Hopkins's criticism of him when he defiantly walked across Westminster Bridge earlier this year following the attack on Parliament.

The post echoes the Nazis' Final Solution during World War II which led to the Holocaust, and Twitter users were quick to criticise Hopkins for the insensitive tweet, branding it "despicable".

The Independent states that she has been reported to the Metropolitan Police over the tweet, but it was too early to confirm whether it will be investigated.

Hopkins has since explained that her initial post was a "typo", but that she stands by her opinion: "I stand by my tweet. I find the typo disrespectful to the survivors in Manchester."

It now reads: "22 dead - number rising. Schofield. Don't you even dare. Do not be part of the problem. We need a true solution. #ManchesterArena"

Geordie Shore's Scotty T has also been slammed for a tweet posted last night, but he's since claimed that he was hacked.

Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid broke down live on air reporting about the Manchester terror attack, while it has been confirmed that general election campaigning has been temporarily suspended.
