Katy Perry, Caitlyn Jenner and George Takei are among the stars who have publically condemned Donald Trump for banning transgender people from serving in the US military.

A host of celebrities voiced their disbelief and rage on their social media accounts after the President of the United States made the shock announcement on Wednesday.

Reality star Jenner, who supported Trump during the US elections, asked him what had happened to his “promise” to protect the LGBT community.

She wrote: “There are 15,000 patriotic transgender Americans in the US military fighting for all of us. What happened to your promise to fight for them?”

Staunch Hillary Clinton advocate Perry wrote: “ALL those who defend our right to live freely should be able to serve freely! There are THOUSANDS currently serving! #ProtectTransTroops.”

Star Wars actor Takei angrily tweeted: “Donald: With your ban on trans people from the military, you are on notice that you just p***** off the wrong community. You will regret it.”

He added: “History shall record that you are not only the stupidest, most incompetent president ever, but also the cruelest and pettiest. #Shame.”

“I grew up in a military w/ LGBT people serving in the shadows. We can't let DT turn back the clock on our brave, trans soldiers. #RISEUP,” wrote filmmaker Dustin Lance Black.

Transgender activist and former soldier Chelsea Manning wrote: “so, biggest baddest most $$ military on earth cries about a few trans people but funds the F-35? sounds like cowardice #WeGotThis.”

She said militaries like the US army “have always been a social experiment just as much as a fighting force.”

She added: “Today is further reason we should dismantle the bloated and dangerous military/intel/police state to fund #healthcare for all.”

On Wednesday, Trump wrote: “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow......

“....Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming.....

“....victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”
