Katy Perry opens up about past relationship with Russell Brand: 'It was like a tornado'

Katy Perry has opened up about her tumultuous marriage to ex-husband Russell Brand.

On Sunday, the singer appeared on 60 Minutes Australia, where she revealed that her relationship with Brand, who she was married to for 14 months before separating in 2011, was like a “tornado”.

“It was the first kind of breaking of my idealistic mind,” the 35-year-old recalled about the breakdown of their marriage. “I was having great success at 23, 24 and 25 and then I met someone that was interesting and stimulating. It was just like a tornado, it was everything happening at once.

“But I’ve always really resonated with friction and resistance and challenges."

According to Perry, who recently gave birth to a daughter with Orlando Bloom, she knows that hard work often leads to something great, explaining: "I know that inherently it’s going to take a lot of work but we’re going to get somewhere great, or it's going to be a beautiful diamond."

“All this pressure is going to turn into a beautiful diamond,” she said.

Perry and the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor married in 2010 before divorcing in 2011 after 14 months.

According to Perry, Brand asked for a divorce via text message on New Year’s Eve.

“He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him,” the Firework singer told Vogue in 2013. “Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011.”

During the recent interview, Perry also discussed her relationship with Bloom, which she described as a “healthy frictional, very open, very communicative, nothing is swept under the mat type of relationship."

The couple welcomed their first child together, Daisy Dove, last Wednesday.
