Keep Calm And Carry On Puffing! OAP Smokes Pipe As Rescuers Drag Him From Sinking Car

A pensioner kept calm and carried on puffing - after accidentally driving his car into a lake.

The man, in his 80s, apparently remained unfazed and continued smoking his pipe as rescuers rushed to pull him from his flooded Ford Focus.

He’d gone to a farm near Wellesbourne, Warwickshire, to fish at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday.

But somehow he ended up driving his vehicle into the pond.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an advanced community paramedic, a paramedic area support officer and an ambulance crew to the scene.

“After his car ended up in the water, he smoked his pipe and chatted to the farmer who went into the lake in his waders,” said a WMAS spokesman.

“He wasn’t hurt or even cold but ambulance crews removed his clothing to ensure he didn’t get cold and he was driven home in the ambulance,” he added.

John Hutsby, who owns Oakham Farm Pools in Loxley, Warks., said it was the first time the man, who has not been named, had visited the site.

“We had to meet him down by the gate to let him in and he started driving up to the lake,” he said.

"He must have saw some fisherman on the other side and started driving over to them thinking it was flat. But he went straight up the bank and into the pond - he must have took off.

"The fishermen said they heard an almighty splash but he was just sitting there and carried on smoking his pipe while the car sank.

"It went up to the car windows in the end but he just kept puffing away - completely unperturbed by what had happened.”
