'Keep your windows shut' firefighters warn as they tackle industrial estate fire

Fire crews have been sent to tackle a large fire at an industrial estate in south Essex. Firefighters are at the scene of the incident at Burnt Mills Industrial Estate in Basildon.

Photos shared by eyewitnesses show large plumes of smoke rising into the skyline. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has asked nearby residents to close their doors and windows.

Crews from Basildon, Leigh, Rayleigh, Wickford and Southend are all attending. They were first alerted to the incident shortly before 12.30pm on Sunday (July 7). It is a large pile of household waste, approximately 10m by 5m high which is on fire.

Incident Commander Steve Kirkham said: "Crews have done a great job at surrounding the fire, which is now under control. Firefighters are working with the site staff to pick apart the rubbish using machinery on site.

"We are likely to remain here until the early evening to extinguish the fire."
