BBC legal drama Keeping Faith returned for a second series on Tuesday night (July 23), set 18 months after the shocking climax of the first series.

In series one, Faith Howell – played by Eve Myles – was trying to uncover why her husband Evan (Bradley Freegard) mysteriously disappeared.

While investigating his disappearance, Faith became entangled in a dangerous web of lies and conspiracies as shocking revelations about her husband emerged – all until he suddenly showed up in the show's shock finale.

Series two finds Evan halfway through his four-year prison sentence and Faith drawn into a murder trial when local mother Madlen Vaughan is charged with killing her husband.

But first, viewers had to lust over Faith's new blue coat. While her trusty yellow mac wasn't going anywhere, it was nice to see that Faith had a wardrobe update.

During the episode, we saw flashbacks to what happened immediately after Evan's return, with Faith shown angrily head-butting her husband for everything he put her and her family through.

But despite her anger towards him, later exchanges between the two seemed to hint that Faith was willing to try and make their marriage work once he got out of prison.

While Evan is still a big part of her life, the present-day scenes saw Faith more focused on defending Madlen, even though the rest of her law firm didn't seem to think she was up to it.

Although Madlen denies murdering her husband, her fingerprints were found on the gun. But when her son, who is in primary school, was interviewed by a detective, it seemed he may know more about what happened than he's letting on.

Viewers on Twitter had plenty of praise for the episode, declaring it a great start to the second series.

Keeping Faith airs on BBC One and is available to watch on iPlayer.
