Sir Keir Starmer has ruled out an early general election after a petition calling for a vote reached over two million signatures. Over the weekend, a viral petition circulated on social media, championed by many including Elon Musk.

The government's official website features the petition with the statement: "I would like there to be another General Election. I believe the current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead up to the last election."

Reform UK MPs have been actively encouraging signatures as a showcase of discontent towards the government, with Rupert Lowe MP urging: "Register your discontent, register your anger, register your disgust with this Labour Government. Send Starmer a message. Sign, share, and share again."

The government is required to respond to any petition that garners 10,000 signatures, and will consider debating those that reach 100,000. This particular petition has been dubbed the fastest-growing ever, currently ranking third among the most popular. At the time of writing, the petition has 2.6 million signatures.

The top two spots are occupied by Brexit-related petitions, with over 6 million people calling for the government to reverse Brexit and remain in the EU in 2019, and over 4 million requesting a second referendum in 2016. Although neither petition was successful, both were debated in Parliament.

On ITV's This Morning, the Prime Minister said: "There will be plenty of people who didn't want us in, in the first place. So, what my focus is on is the decisions that I have to make every day."
