From Twiggy to Emma Thompson: What celebrities wore to receive their honours

Every year approximately 25 investiture ceremonies take place between Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.

Each event, held either by The Queen or a member of the Royal Family, awards over 50 recipients with an honour for their personal bravery, outstanding achievements or other services.

Over the years, numerous celebrities have been awarded with one of the six different Orders of Chivalry and four Orders of Merit, the best known being the MBEs (The Most Excellent Order) and OBEs (Officer Of The Most Excellent).

The royal occasion calls for stylish celebs to don their most chic ensembles, and whilst some opt for classic looks, others go for statement - and sometimes - rule-breaking looks.

Lesley Lawson, better known as Twiggy, became one of the first celebrities to attend an investiture ceremony in 2019, collecting her damehood for services to fashion, the arts and charity.

Looking every inch the style icon, Twiggy wore a pristine, all-white ensemble made up of a tailored suit, off-white silk shirt, brogues and even matching white socks.

Keira Knightley put on a quirky appearance in December 2018, choosing to wear a lemon tweed Chanel suit from the French brand's spring/summer 2017 couture collection to collect her OBE.

Although the suit and bow-detailed shirt was a statement in itself, the actress also accessorised with a matching hat.

Knightley isn't the only one to have caused a sartorial stir at the Palace.

Emma Thompson hit headlines last November when she received her damehood wearing a dapper navy and black trouser suit by British designer Stella McCartney. She finished off the androgynous outfit with a pair of rule-breaking Stan Smith trainers (Buckingham Palace's dress code customarily calls for smart attire) and an equal pay badge

Other stars have stuck to more traditional ensembles. Actress Naomie Harris opted for a chic coat dress, Victoria Beckham a simple black dress from her eponymous clothing line and Anna Wintour went for a perfect pink two-set.

It is Angelina Jolie, though, who royally nailed her honorary damehood outfit. Meeting the Queen in 2017, the actress and activist wore a sleek dove grey two-piece by Ralph and Russo with her hair fashioned into a demure updo. The ultimate 'what to wear to meet the Queen' inspo - should you ever need it.
