Kellyanne Conway criticises 'politicised' Emmys but praises Sean Spicer cameo

White House counsellor Kellyanne Conway has accused the 69th Emmy Awards of being too 'politicised' after a ceremony which took aim at Donald Trump.

Conway offered her views about the ceremony - which saw her former colleague Sean Spicer brought on stage during host Stephen Colbert's opening monologue - on Fox & Friends Monday morning (18 September).

“They got plucked and polished and waxed and some of them didn’t eat for two months, and all for what? To sound the same,” Conway said in reference to the ceremony's audience, largely comprised of TV's biggest stars.

She expressed her belief that this is why viewing ratings were so low (audience figures were down 2.4% from 2016 making it one of the lowest-viewed ceremonies in Emmys history): “...it looks like the ratings are suffering, it looks like America is responding by tuning out.”

While she levelled that the entertainers “have a right to speak” and are “welcome to their opinion,” she added that it doesn't fit with high-profile events such as this.

One moment she did praise, however, was the cameo of Spicer whose heavily-criticised appearance saw him poke fun at his now-infamous “alternative facts” comments: “I'm very happy my former White House colleague is a man of good humour.”

She also had fond words for Saturday Night Live's Kate McKinnon who won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her parody appearances as both Hillary Clinton and Conway with the latter saying: “It had to be much more fun to play me.”
