Kenyan sinkhole swallows everything in its path

Story and video from SWNS

This mesmerising footage captures a massive sinkhole eating up everything in its path.

The fascinating natural occurrence happened in Kericho, a town in the highlands west of the Kenyan Rift Valley in east Africa.

In the video, the seemingly small sinkhole starts by sucking in water from the large puddle before pulling in mud and long grass, then huge chunks of land.

Locals can be overheard shouting and laughing in shock and amazement at the scene, caused by heavy rain.

The East African Great Rift Valley is a series of geological trenches spanning approximately 6,000 kilometres along the divergent tectonic plate boundary. It is in the process of splitting the African Plate into two separate plates, referred to as the Nubian Plate and the Somali Plate.

Because it is an active tectonic zone, it features various cracks, holes and underground voids. Following heavy rains, the overlying soil was eroded exposing the cracks and underground voids. This caused the runoff water to sip in through the openings to fill up the spaces.
