Despite fans of the show hoping it will happen – Digital Spy readers included – Strictly Come Dancing has no plans to introduce same-sex couples to the competition.

We know that previous contestants are calling for it, and 52% of you lot at home, but what about the professional dancers involved? What do they really think?

Well, while we can't speak for all of the team, we do know that Kevin Clifton has absolutely "no problem" with the idea of same-sex couples taking to the Strictly dancefloor.

Kevin weighed in on the issue on Twitter, replying to a fan who asked if he would "be open" to dancing with a man in future series.

"Just to be clear [I'm] not involved in any of these decisions," he explained. "But if that's what they wanted then i'd have no problem with it."

Strictly Come Dancing bosses confirmed earlier this month that this year's run will keep the traditional format of male-female dance partners, but there is still reason for a change-up.

Everyone's favourite legal eagle Judge Robert Rinder, who took part on Strictly in 2016, has said that same-sex couples on the show would "be great" for "visibility".

"Strictly is a big part of some people's lives and for a young gay person going through [a difficult time], they could see that it can be fun, joyous and OK," he said.
