Kevin Spacey is being investigated by Scotland Yard over a third complaint of sexual assault.

A third man came forward to say the Oscar-winning actor, 58, assaulted them in London in 2005.

"On December 13 we received an allegation that the man sexually assaulted a man (Victim 3) in 2005 in Westminster," a spokesman from London's Metropolitan Police said.

The force did not directly link Spacey to the fresh allegation, but said the alleged perpetrator is the same as person as the subject of complaints in the south London borough of Lambeth in 2005 and 2008, which was identified as the actor.

After the first allegation of sexual advances were made by actor Anthony Rapp in October a number of men and women have alleged that Spacey behaved inappropriately towards them.

Among them was the King of Norway's former son-in-law who accused the actor of sexual harassment after a Nobel Peace Prize concert. Ari Behn told radio station P4 that it happened after the actor had hosted the event in 2007.

Law enforcement agencies in the US have also launched investigations into the actor.

London's Old Vic theatre said it has received 20 personal testimonies of alleged inappropriate behaviour by Kevin Spacey, who was its artistic director between 2004 and 2015.

Those affected said they "felt unable to raise concerns", and he "operated without sufficient accountability", the theatre said in a statement, adding that it truly apologised for not creating a culture where people felt able to speak free.

Netflix also fired Spacey from House Of Cards. The streaming giant also decided not to proceed with a film starring Spacey as Gore Vidal.

Christopher Plummer was also drafted in to replace him in Ridley Scott’s drama All the Money in the World, leading to last-minute reshoots before the film’s release on 22 December.

The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced it will no longer give the actor a special Emmy award and his agent and publicist dropped him as a client.

In response to Mr Rapp's claims, Spacey said he had no memory of the incident and offered an apology.

He added that he was seeking treatment, but gave no information about what type.

The actor has not been seen in public since.
