House of Cards fans who think that season five can't possibly top the scandalous real-life political climate created by Donald Trump should think again - according to Kevin Spacey.

The Primetime Emmy Award-winning Netflix series has often made the rowdy world of actual US politics seem tame in years past with its penchant for murder, naughty trysts in the White House and cynical view of world relations… but can it really compete with a Trump administration in a new scandal each week?

The answer is a resounding 'Yes' according to an interview that Golden Globe-winning star Kevin Spacey recently gave to TV and Satellite magazine.

"There's been a lot of commentary about how we can't compete [with Trump] and that it's not going to be as interesting and as crazy as the real world," the actor admitted.

"My answer to that is, just you wait. It's one of the most exciting seasons we have done. I haven't been as excited since the first season."

His co-star Robin Wright has also been light-hearted about the impact that Trump and his cabinet have had on House of Cards' upcoming storylines.

"Trump has stolen all of our ideas for season 6, I don't what we're gonna do," she teased.

The crux of the upcoming season will be the final months of the heated US presidential race between Frank Underwood (Spacey) and his Republican rival, New York governor Will Conway (Joel Kinnaman).

We've already seen both pull out all of the stops to sink the other's campaign, but nothing has worked so far. What will they do now that election day is actually looming?

House of Cards season five premieres on Netflix on May 30. Watch a trailer below:
