All the key developments planned for Greater Manchester this week

A huge housing development plan in Wigan, as well as hundreds more homes for Stockport and Salford, are the biggest plans tabled this week.

In the Hindley area of Wigan, a 2,000 home plan has been touted after years of waiting. The proposal includes 30 acres of employment development, open space, sports pitches, and play facilities.

However, local politicians are already fearing the traffic implications.

Over in Stockport, green belt land has been targeted for a new 700 homes development. The Heald Green East has been earmarked by Boor Homes for an ‘urban extension’.

Then a 18-storey apartment block with more than 150 ‘affordable’ homes could be coming to a £1bn Salford Central neighbourhood.

Plans for 700 homes on Stockport's green belt

A developer has shared plans to build 700 homes on Stockport’s green belt. Land at Heald Green East has been earmarked by Boor Homes for an ‘urban extension’ with new houses.

Bosses behind the scheme say it would include a ‘variety’ of housing options to help tackle Stockport’s shortage of homes.

If approved, half of the homes on the 83-acre plot near the Wilmslow-Handforth bypass would be designated as ‘affordable’ - priced below market rates.

Plan for 2,000 homes in Wigan

Wigan council and land and property giant Peel are poised to submit a new planning application for a 2,000-home development on land at South Hindley.

However, local councillors and residents are already arguing that there can be ‘no homes without a road’ - alluding to the long-awaited by-pass linking Wigan with its neighbouring town, Bolton. An outline planning application was submitted in 2018 for a residential-led ‘mixed-use’ scheme along with a new east-west strategic link road with three access points on Liverpool road, Park Road and Leigh Road.

This would have been accompanied by 30 acres of employment development, new open space and sports pitches, play facilities, parking and internal roads.

There have been no new significant planning applications submitted to Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale or Tameside councils this week.
