Key element Eddie Howe is factoring into Sandro Tonali's Newcastle United selection

Sandro Tonali was "mentally fatigued" when he returned from international duty with Italy earlier this month - hence the reason why Eddie Howe opted against starting him in the Premier League.

Tonali only made the bench for the 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers and then watched on as Joe Willock was preferred in the 3-1 loss to Fulham. However, Howe has hinted he could be ready to start in the clash against Man City this weekend.

When asked why Tonali had played two lots of 90 minutes for Italy in the UEFA Nations League, Howe played down any difficulties with the player.

Howe told Chronicle Live: "Italy played him for the two games and they played him for 90 minutes. I have got no issue with that, it has been a long time without football. So I am not going to sit here and say we were not happy with our game management. It was fine and I was really pleased he came through it.

"When he came back we had to manage him to a degree because he was very tired and physically and mentally fatigued. It was a big two games for him, you have to understand from Sandro's perspective.

"That was a big moment, not just his return with us but his return with the national team. It was a big thing. He was under a lot of pressure. But he has handled himself really well. He has trained really well this week and it looks like his energy is in a good place so I am really pleased with him."

When asked what Tonali now had to do to win a place in his team on a regular basis - with fans chanting for his arrival on to the field at Craven Cottage last weekend - Howe said: "There is no magic trick. Train well, and then when you get a chance to play, play well. Do that consistently - and I say the same to any player - you will end up in the team."
