  • LEGO is launching a new line of DIY-themed products called LEGO DOTS.

  • Kids will be able to decorate their own accessories and room décor items with cute LEGO tiles.

  • LEGO DOTS will be available beginning in March.

Just when you thought you've seen everything you can do with a LEGO set, LEGO comes up with something new and inventive. Now, the company is celebrating the launch of a new line, LEGO DOTS. For DOTS creations, instead of the bulky brick sets that are used to make buildings, pirate ships, spacecrafts, and other 3D scenes, there are flatter, colorful, 2D-esque tiles to decorate a variety of accessories and home décor items. In that way, they more closely resemble crafty DIY projects rather than building sets.

DOTS are recommended for ages 6+, but they're perfect for kids hitting that tween stage where they get really into customizing and decorating every inch of their room and all their school supplies.

The idea for the line came about from a survey conducted with 10,800 parents and 7,200 children across the US, China, and Germany. The results noted kids were looking for more personalized forms of play, and they wanted an outlet to be able to express their own personalities. Hence DOTS, which can be endlessly re-arranged depending on how the artist feels at that particular moment.

DOTS will be available starting March 1, and the line will feature customizable bracelets ($5), a mini picture frame ($4), a photo cube set ($15 for three cubes), a jewelry holder ($15), and a pencil holder ($20).

In addition, builders will be able to buy "booster bags" ($4) with even more decorative tiles to add into the mix — tiles with emojis, glitter, and fun patterns.

To launch the line, LEGO partnered with artist Camille Walala for a free walk-through installation in London called the "HOUSE OF DOTS." Walala constructed a five-room house — including a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and even a unique DOTS disco— made from more than 2 million LEGO tiles and decorated with the new DOTS.

Okay, so maybe your kids' rooms won't look that spectacular — at least not at first. But they can LEGO DOTS-ify at least some corner of it, be it a dresser jewelry stand or a pencil holder, and be on their way to a room that matches their unique personalities.
