Kim Jong Un's wife has had her 'status' upgraded so she can have her own personality cult
Kim Jong Un’s wife has had her status ‘upgraded’ in a bid to create a cult of personality around her.
Ri Sol Ju is now referred to as “revered first lady” rather than “comrade”, reportedly upgraded the North Korean leader’s wife in status.
The title was used when Ri Sol Ju attended a ballet performance by the visiting National Ballet of China, state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
It apparently came with a special verb ending which reinforced her honour.
Peter Ward, a writer for NK News, tweeted that the reference to “Respected Madame Ri Sol Ju” used a special particle and honourific verb ending usually only reserved for Kim II Sung, Kim Jong II and Kim Jong Un.

“Signs that Ri Sol Ju is getting her own personality cult,” he wrote.
He added that the promotion was ‘huge’ for North Korea as Ri Sol Ju had joined a “very select club”.
In North Korea terms, this is huge. As the work of my good friend indicates, this is a very select club (as few as five people total who were alive when it happened + KJI's mother, Kim Jong Suk). Kims' wives often lose the status: https://t.co/EM4N7M5kVM
