Jurgen Klopp has admitted his Liverpool side were far from their best in their opening-day draw against Fulham. The Reds, who came second in the Premier League last season, were heavy favourites against their newly-promoted opposition but could have easily lost the game."We are used to more dominance and we never could get that because we just played not good enough, not quick enough, not precise enough, all these kinds of things," Klopp said. He also suggested dropping two points is "punishment" for the poor performance.

The British pound was little changed against the dollar and euro on Monday as traders digested last week's Bank of England (BoE) decision and turned their focus to growth figures due on Friday that should give clues on the state of the economy. The data, expected to show a contraction during the quarter, will be released a week after the Bank of England (BoE) said it expects the United Kingdom to enter a recession in the fourth quarter this year and not emerge until 2024. The central bank's outlook was coupled with a half-point interest rate rise to 1.75%, a large increase by the BoE's standards but lower than those of some other global central banks, including the Federal Reserve and Bank of Canada.
The Conservative leadership hopefuls have clashed over how best to help households amid the cost of living crisis, with Liz Truss ruling out direct support and insisting instead on tax cuts - an approach her rival has called "simply wrong". Ms Truss, the Tory frontrunner, has rejected "handouts" to help households through the worse income squeeze in 60 years. "It's simply wrong to rule out further direct support at this time as Liz Truss has done and, what's more, her tax proposals are not going to help very significantly people like pensioners or those on low incomes, who are exactly the kind of families that are going to need help."
