Kim Kardashian, Mel B, and more stars rocking fall's shimmery silver hair color trend

Many people are looking to dramatically switch up their look as they step into fall. You can easily update your wardrobe or try out a bold lipstick, but going for a fresh new hair hue is probably your best bet if you really want to turn heads. Wondering what this season’s “it” color is? Just think silver fox with a hint of sparkle.

We have witnessed many stars show off their unique versions of shimmery silver strands, and women are running to salons requesting it too. Clairol color ambassador and Washington, D.C.-based hairstylist Shirley Gordon tells Yahoo Lifestyle that the color has continued to be in high demand: “I have a lot of clients who are still asking for gray or silver shades. Steely gray is popular with all ages,” she says.

If you are ready to try the shade, but think your hair may be too dark, Redken artist Sean Godard recommends “pre-neutralizing the hair first to clean the canvas of warmth before applying the final color tone.” He adds, “It’s all about getting the hair lighter and past the orange and yellow stages to be able to tone with the smoky or pastel tones.”

Is there an easy way to transition into silver? Yes and no. If you are already gray or going gray, this will be virtually seamless. “Anyone that is very blond from summer can easily transform to a cooler tone very simply with a gloss,” says Godard. “Darker hair types tend to get warmer from the summer sun, so these colors can require a gloss to neutralize the warmth.

A fresh balayage or foil highlight application can also get your hair ready for fall. If you are still a little nervous, try a temporary hair coloring product such as Clairol Color Crave Hair Makeup in Shimmering Platinum. Gordon believes that’s a great way to test this look before committing to permanent color.
