King's Cross fire: Smoke billows into sky as huge fire breaks out near Caledonian Road

Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze which has ripped through a building site in King's Cross.

Emergency Services rushed to the scene of the fire near Caledonian Road as dramatic pictures posted on social media showed black plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.

The fire could be seen for miles around as more than 20 people called the emergency services at about midday on Thursday.

Nearby offices were reportedly evacuated and people were advised to stay clear of the area.

Emma Yeomans said: "Building site fire on Caledonian Road, Kings Cross. Nearby offices evacuated."

Another Twitter user added: "Billowing black smoke from building site on Caledonian road, kings cross. Sirens approaching. Suspect the area will be closed off soon!"

Monty MonCrieff said: "Fire in #KingsCross on #CaledonianRoad near work just now. Looks to be at the new @PhysicsNews building."

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters battled the fire on Balfe Street.

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade said: “Part of a south facing wall at the building site was damaged by fire. One person self evacuated from the cab of a 30 metre crane.

"Fire crews from Islington, Kentish Town, Holloway, Paddington and Lambeth fire stations are at the scene.

“The cause of the fire is currently unknown.”
