King Charles Hopes to Attend Easter Church Service with the Royals with a Slight Change to Plans

However, Kate Middleton and Prince William's family are not expected to step out for the holiday

King Charles may join the royal family's traditional Easter outing despite his step back from the public eye amid his cancer treatment.

The 75-year-old monarch is hoping to attend Easter church at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on Sunday. However, the service will be on a smaller-scale than usual, following doctors' advice to limit the number of people he should come in contact with during his treatment.

The King's appearance won't be confirmed until the holiday.

King Charles is "progressing well" in his treatment, and there is an “amplified confidence" in the light of the sophisticated treatment the royal is receiving, a royal source tells PEOPLE.

"He is positive, the doctors are optimistic," the source adds.

The insider says that King Charles is planning for a "summer diary," but won’t commit to any engagements as they will rely on “medical advice nearer the time.”

King Charles' recent outings have been restricted by doctors to small numbers of people, but as summer approaches, more engagements could happen outside — such as Trooping the Color, the annual public celebration of the monarch's birthday.

"One thing that has been wholly undiminished is his appetite for work," the royal source says.

While King Charles is hoping to attend Easter with the royals, Kate Middleton, Prince William and their three children — Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5 — will not be at the family gathering in Windsor following the news of Princess Kate undergoing cancer treatment following her abdominal surgery in January.

According to Kensington Palace, Princess Kate will make her official return to public duties based on advice from her doctors.

"The Princess will return to official duties when she is cleared to do so by her medical team. She is in good spirits and is focused on making a full recovery," a palace spokesperson said on Friday.

The King shared his support for his daughter-in-law amid her cancer diagnosis, which she revealed in an emotional video message on Friday. He is "so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson told PEOPLE.
