The new King Charles III banknotes are entering circulation from today (June 5) and Brits have been given updated guidance on what to do with notes featuring the late Queen. The King's portrait will be featured on all £5, £10, £20 and £50 polymer notes.

Fourteen Post Offices across the nation have started stocking the new currency today, offering £5, £10 and £20 notes. The plastic fiver continues to carry Sir Winston Churchill's image on the front, while Jane Austen graces the £10 note and JMW Turner is featured on the £20 banknote.

Alan Turing remains on the £50 note. Karen Stonham, branch manager at the Portsmouth Post Office, and Krishna Thakeria, branch manager at the Broadway Post Office, both expressed their excitement about being part of the launch.

Karen stated: "Our local customers come into our branch every day to withdraw or deposit cash for their daily needs, so we were excited to be one of the first branches to have the new banknotes available. It's been a significant day for Portsmouth, with the King also in the area for the D-Day anniversary celebrations."

Krishna said: "We are delighted to be able to offer customers a chance to get their hands on these new designs from the day they launch. Not only that but the new-look notes hold a special significance for us at Broadway Post Office, given our proximity to Buckingham Palace and the historic Cabinet War Rooms, which hold strong connections to Winston Churchill who continues to feature on the reverse of the £5 note."

The full list of Post Office branches where you can pick up the new King Charles banknotes today includes Piccadilly Plaza (Manchester), M2 1BB; Sunderland City, SR1 1RR; Portsmouth, PO1 1AB; Birmingham, B2 4AA; The City of London, EC2M 5TE; and Moorgate, EC2M 5TE.

Additional branches stocking the fresh currency are Broadway, SW1H 0AX; Great Massingham, PE31 6HP; Tetbury, GL8 8DB; Minchinhampton, GL6 9BN; Windsor, SL4 1AA; Houndsditch, E1 7BS; Woodstock, OX20 1SP; and Poundbury, DT1 3AZ. These notes will coexist with those featuring Queen Elizabeth II, who died at Balmoral in September 2022, allowing both versions to circulate concurrently.
