The Kissing Booth star Joey King has lined up her next role with new Netflix movie Uglies, and it's something that is quite special to her.

The actress, who plays Elle Evans in The Kissing Booth and its recent sequel, has been announced to star in the adaptation of Scott Westerfeld's 2005 dystopian fantasy novel.

However, speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about the project, King explained that the book series was one of her favourites growing up.

"I kind of can't say too much, other than I'm really excited to work with Netflix again," she said.

"I mean, I have such a wonderful relationship with everyone over there, and this book series [Uglies] has been one of my absolute favourite things in the world when I was younger to read, and to just be so lost in, and engrossed in.

"So being able to tell that story with a company that I love so much is really, really, exciting."

Uglies is set in a future where a compulsory operation at 16 wipes out physical differences and makes everyone conform to an ideal standard of beauty.

The movie adaptation will be directed by McG (The Babysitter), with Krista Vernoff (Grey's Anatomy) writing the screenplay.

King, meanwhile, recently starred in psychological horror thriller The Lie alongside Peter Sarsgaard, which will soon be coming to streaming.

The Lie will be available on Amazon Prime Video from October 6.
