Kit Harington is hoping he can finally cut his hair after filming wraps on the final season of Game of Thrones.

The actor, who plays Jon Snow in the hit series, told Entertainment Weekly that he wanted to "step away" from the recognisable character and "enjoy the obscurity" for a while.

"...Make myself less recognisable as the character, and go and do some other things with a completely new look and tone," he said.

Asked "how short" he planned on going he responded: "Short-short. The beard will be harder to get rid of - I quite like the beard. I like having both the long hair and beard, but it'll be like a ritualistic thing. I can't go into my next role looking the same. This role was brilliant, but I need to get rid of Jon Snow."

The last time Harington had shorter hair was when he was trying to keep up the charade that Jon Snow was "definitely dead" between season 5 and 6, to make it look as though he was finished with the show.

Harington isn't the only actor who's gone for a makeover after a major, long-term role: Emma Watson also went from long hair to a short crop after finishing the Harry Potter film series, explaining: "I'm not a little girl anymore. I'd been on Harry Potter for 10 years so I needed to mark the end of it in some way. I needed a drastic change and that's what the crop was all about."

Harington's co-star Emilia Clarke said her own personal goodbye to Game of Thrones on Instagram this week in Ireland, writing: "Hopped on a boat to an island to say goodbye to the land that has been my home away from home for almost a decade.

"It's been a trip @gameofthrones thank you for the life I never dreamed I'd be able to live and the family I'll never stop missing."

Game of Thrones season 8 is expected to air in earliy 2019.
