Game of Thrones, Gunpowder – you could say Kit Harrington has a type when it comes to picking TV dramas to star in.

However, he's admitted he's had enough of the historical genre for now and wants to retire the horse riding and give another era a shot instead.

"This fitted quite well into not being able to cut my hair! Why I keep ending up in cold, muddy places, on horses, I've no idea. It must be some desire that's built into me from a past life, I think," he recently told press.

"I'm personally done now with [that] so moving forward, [I'd like] something with guns! Just move my way slowly more modern, century by century."

Kit is about to star as Robert Catesby in Gunpowder – the story of the planning and failed execution of the infamous Gunpowder Plot – that he has a quirky family connection to.

"I suppose I want to avoid the term 'passion project' – but the idea spawned from a piece of family curiosity, which is that my mother's maiden name is Catesby, my middle name is Catesby... and it was always the thing that we were told, growing up, that were were related to the leader of the gunpowder plot."

That was pretty perfect casting then from a historical point of view.

He continued: "It's such a significant piece of typically English folklore and we mark it every year... it just seemed odd to us that it hadn't been dramatised, so that's where the idea spawned from – from a family connection, but more from the fact that it seemed like an idea that was quite ripe for doing."

Gunpowder will air later this year on BBC One.
