An elderly woman was run over and killed by a lorry in front of horrified shoppers in Knightsbridge.

The pensioner, 83, was hit by the dropside truck less than 400 yards from Harrods in Brompton Road just before 6pm yesterday.

Medics battled to save her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the lorry stopped at the scene and was treated for shock, police said.

A bartender at the nearby Bunch of Grapes pub described horrified tourists seeking refuge inside after witnessing the crash.

Rush-hour traffic between South Kensington and Knightsbridge ground to a halt as police threw up a large cordon across the thoroughfare.

A blue tent forensic tent could be seen in the road 20 feet behind the stricken white and blue truck.

The crash took place just yards from the Grade II-listed Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, next to the Victoria and Albert museum.

The woman’s next of kin have been informed. There have been no arrests.
