From Car and Driver

  • The Hummer EV will come standard at launch with four removable transparent roof panels.

  • The panels will fit in the Hummer's frunk for storage.

  • GMC says the structural rigidity provided by the truck's large battery pack makes the removable roof possible.

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV has one very obvious competitor: Tesla's Cybertruck, conveniently slated to hit the market in early 2022 just like the Hummer. But GMC has more than one rival in its crosshairs. If the Hummer's off-road credentials don't convince you that GMC is taking aim at Jeep's Gladiator and Wrangler, maybe its four-panel removable roof will.

GMC says the structural rigidity provided by the truck's large battery pack made the removable roof possible. At least in the launch edition, dubbed Edition 1, the removable roof will be standard equipment and the four individual panels will be transparent. Later on, as more versions of the Hummer roll out, it's possible that GMC will make the removable panels optional or will make the standard panels opaque. There will be a fixed bar running between the B-pillars parallel to the windshield. A removable bar running perpendicular to the windshield between the A- and B-pillars will sit between the front roof panels. A fixed bar running perpendicular to the windshield and running between the B- and C-pillars will lie between the rear roof panels.

All four roof panels will fit inside the Hummer's frunk for storage. A vinyl storage bag will be standard, but more fastidious owners can also opt for the optional foam storage boxes that will be available as a dealer accessory.

We don't know yet how easy or hard the panels will be to remove. In the Gladiator and Wrangler, the front roof panels are relatively easy to doff—it can even be a single person job—but the rear section is heavy, too large for a single person to maneuver, and must be unbolted (and the wire harness unplugged) before it can be lifted free. GM engineers told us that they designed this four-piece system with ease of operation in mind. We look forward to trying it for ourselves. So, we hope that the launch of the 2022 Hummer EV doesn't see us balancing precariously on a ladder with a quarter of a pickup truck's roof in our hands. But if it does, you can read about it here.
