All we know so far as serious A1 crash closes road with one person taken to hospital

A serious collision on the A1 has seen one person taken to hospital and caused the road to be closed for several hours.

The road is closed in both directions between J62 A690, Carrville and J63 A167, Chester-Le-Street.

There is queueing traffic in the area and drivers are being told to find alternative routes. The serious collision between two cars took place at around 3.30am on Friday, May 31.

Durham Constabulary said on X: "We're currently at the scene of a serious collision on the A1(M). The road has been closed in both directions between J62 Carrville & 63 Chester-le-Street.

"It is expected to remain closed for several hours while officers work at the scene. Please find an alternative route."

National Highways North East also released a statement on X, saying: "The A1M in County Durham is closed in both directions between J63 (Chester-le-Street) and J62 (Durham) due to a serious collision involving two cars.

"Durham Police are on the scene. For more info follow the link here."

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 3.22am today (31 May) for a road traffic collision on the A1 southbound carriageway between Chester-le-Street and Durham.

"We dispatched three paramedic crews, a doctor, a paramedic duty officer and our hazardous area response teams to the scene. One patient was taken to hospital."

At approximately 7pm, Durham Constabulary confirmed that the road was due to reopen on Friday evening following the collision. The force confirmed that the incident involved an Audi Q5 and a Peugeot 308.
